If you have the time you can check out all my previous Bkk travelogues:
2013: 1 2 3
2012: 1 2 3
2011: 1 2 3 4
Realised I didn't blog about some of the trips! Guess I was too busy shopping to even take pictures
------------
These are the places I usually visit when I'm in Bkk. And I have placed them in the ascending order according to my favourite palces. Which means number 1 is my MUST GO place and the last one... you know~
#1 Pratunam Wholesale Market
I love love love love this market! It has many lanes full of shops, with huge varieties and they are all dirt cheap. Like seriously! I think this is the cheapest place to get your loot from!
However, I have to say that some of the clothes are of lousy quality (what you pay is what you get). And another downside of this market is that it is super narrow and squeezy and a little humid sometimes. It's a wholesale market so expect alot of locals with pushing their stocks around. It gets irritating sometimes!
This is the road that leads to the Pratunam Market and the red circle is where Pratunam market starts!
All these are from Pratunam Market and none of them is above 200 baht!
Tip:
- Bargaining is not really recommended and it will be quite a waste of time. As long as you get the pieces in wholesale, it's really acceptable! For me, even if I'm shopping alone, I can usually do wholesale myself. Just buy the outfit in 3 different colours and voila!
- The shops open at around 6am and closes pretty early! Like 5-6pm. So make sure you don't go there too late.
#2 Morning market outside Baiyoke Sky Hotel
My second favourite place to get cheap and chic clothings. From 6am to around 10.30am or so, the roads outside Baiyoke Sky Hotel will be blocked and temporary stalls will be set up selling super cheap clothings. Expect prices like 100 baht for pretty tops and bottoms. SHIOK!
Downside: You have to wake up super early to catch it
#3 Platinum Fashion Mall
The end of Pratunam market will lead you to an overhead bridge that is linked to Platinum Mall, which is of course the MUST go in Bkk! It is air conditioned, clean and has endless shops!! I used to find it impossible to finish the whole mall in one day.
There's actually Platinum 1, which sells men and women clothings, and Platinum 2, which is more of bags and shoes. Find you cheap sandals here!
Prices in Platinum is much higher (usually 300 baht and above) than Pratunum and the Baiyoke morning market but expect pieces with better quality and more unique designs!
Remeber to eat the crepe at the basement when you're there!
#4 Siam Night Market
After around 6pm or so there are stalls set up opposite Siam square and it leads all the way to opposite MBK. I would say the clothes here are very unique and cannot even be found in Platinum! And I realize that some of stalls actually sell clothes totally sewn by themselves! Which explains why the designs are unique. I love the clothes that you get from this night market although prices get quite steep sometimes. However, you can try to haggle the price a little! ;)
I suggest that you can have dinner at Japanese Restaurants in MBK (love em!) before hopping over to the night market to do some shopping! They end around midnight if I'm not wrong
#5 Chatuchak
Clothes at chatuchak is very cheap and you'd be surprise to know that most of the designs are not easily found at common malls like Platinum. Quality is good as well! Cheap, unique, quality; All checked! ;D
Chatuchak can be easily accessed via the BTS or just hop on a cab or tuktuk!
#6 Chinatown; Sam Peng Lane
This place is definitely the accessories heaven!!!!!! If you are an accessories freak, you NEED to pay this place a visit! It was a little hard to locate though. Try to ask around if you're not sure!
Chinatown sells a lot of bags too!
These are the places that I always visit on my short trips to Bangkok. However, if you have more time, you can check out the other malls like :
- Union Mall
- Terminal 21
- Asiatique
- Victory mall
-------
Now now... I've also decided to be nice and add in a section of budget hotels here! You are welcome!
#1 Budacco
Definitely my favourite budget hotel in Bkk! Location wise is good, rooms are super pretty, very clean and spacious and the staff there are the best!
How can we not love the pink room!!!! *screams*
Cost: around S$60/night with breakfast
#2 Lemontea Hotel
This is a new hotel and they have very nice themed rooms. Staff are very thoughtful and I like that! Refreshing lemon tea served is a bonus! Location wise, approximately 7 min walk to pratunam area, 12 min walk to platinum (not the most ideal location I must say)
Cost: around S$60/ night without breakfast
#3 First House Hotel
This Hotel is just behind Pratunam market. Around 5 mins walk to Platinum. However, it's quite a distant from the airport railway, which can be quite a hassle if you have a heavy luggage on the last day and need to walk all the way to the station!
Rooms are pretty and clean and spacious. A little like budacco but I still love budacco more!
Cost: I can't really remember
#4 Baiyoke boutique
Very near to the airport railway station. I think it's merely a 3 min walk. Rooms are okay-ish, no major compliments, no major complains. Just sleep!
Lastly, only consider these 2 hotels if you are on a tight budget!!!
#6 My Hotel
Far from the main streets, quite dangerous to walk back at night. The bed doesn't feel clean. Overall wasn't a very good experience, but it was very cheap! Less than S$40/ night!
#7 Richy Guesthouse
Located right INSIDE pratunam, you can start shopping once you leave the hotel! Rooms are very small, and I wasn't pleased with the toilet at all. There's like these small ants like insects around. Wasn't too comfortable about that. However, it's only about S$30/night or slightly less. What can you expect from such price!
-------
Alright, thats about all the hotels I've stayed before. Hope this guide helps. Feel free to ask me any questions! HAVE FUN SHOPPING IN BKK!! ^^
